David White
Winner of the 2008
Peggy O'Neill Senior Volunteer Award
For the past four years, RSVP volunteer, Dave White has been a dynamic and visionary leader who has taught and nurtured several hundred older adults in computer technology. Many who thought the information age passed them by are now able to participate and enjoy computer technology in all of its forms. Dave White's knowledge and encouragement have helped the older adults in his community to be excited about not being left out of our society's technological age. Now they enjoy knowing how to do electronic commerce for shopping, banking, credit card transactions, etc. It has also opened up communication with younger generations and other seniors. The Morrisville Senior Computer Learning Center has opened up new world of communication for older adults.

Dave is the creator, organizer, facilitator, and teacher for hands-on computer courses from basic to advanced: Microsoft Word; Excel; Digital Photos; Print Master; File Management; Power Point; and Internet Access. A unique aspect of the program is that peers are teaching peers. He trains the computer coaches. Dace's organizational skills, encouragement and patience have seen the foundation to the success of the program. Dave keeps himself updated on new computer technology, has a weekly user group and encourages students to contact him with their questions. Dave's priority is to have courses of value, but also that can be fun. The Learning Center offers a weekly intergenerational class that is fun and free. High school students, under Dave's guidance, open up a whole new computer world to older adults, which includes things like Facebook, ITunes, YouTube, MySpace, etc., in addition to any other questions they may have about the computer. One older adult student said, "Dave is a natural teacher and never makes anyone look stupid." Others have said Dave is knowledgeable on the subjects he is teaching and makes it a pleasant experience.
